How to publish a website

To publish a website with Devdwell, open the site, press Publish, tick Staging, Production or both, and press Publish to selected. Devdwell builds and uploads the site and the card on your dashboard shows it as live.

In short

Publishing a website in Devdwell is four steps: open the site, click Publish, choose Staging (a private preview), Production (the real address) or both, then click Publish to selected. When it finishes, the site’s card says Live with its address. Check on staging first if anyone else needs to see the change.

Before you start

  • The site is on your Devdwell dashboard. If it isn’t yet, import it first.
  • You’ve made the changes you want and checked them in the preview, at desktop and phone sizes.
  • For a shared site, you need to be the owner or have “Can edit and publish”.

Steps

  1. Open the site

On the dashboard, click the site’s card. It opens in its own tab with the live preview.

  2. Click Publish

Click the Publish button at the top right of the tab. The panel shows where the site can be published and when each address was last published.

  3. Choose staging, production or both

Tick Staging to get a private preview link, where the live site doesn’t change. Tick Production to put the change live at the site’s address. You can tick both.

  4. Click Publish to selected

Devdwell prepares, builds and uploads the site, then puts it live. When it’s done, the card on your dashboard says Live with its address and “published just now”.

Check the live site

Open the address from the card and look at the page you changed, on your phone too. If you published to staging, send the link to whoever needs to approve the change. When they’re happy, publish again with Production ticked.

If something goes wrong

If a step stops, the panel says which one and why, in plain words, and the live site stays as it was. Fix what it mentions (often a missing file or a change that stopped the page from loading) and publish again.

Questions

How long does publishing take?

It depends on the size of the site. The panel shows each step as it happens, so you can see how far it’s got.

Can I publish from my phone?

Yes. In the web app, open the site, go to Publish and press Publish changes, then confirm.

Does publishing to staging change my live site?

No. Staging is a private copy at its own link. The live site only changes when you publish to production.
