Comparison

Devdwell vs Webflow

Webflow is a hosted visual website builder with its own CMS, hosting and e-commerce. Devdwell is a desktop and web app that keeps every site you build in one place, whatever it was built with, and lets you change sites by describing what you want. Choose Webflow to design and host sites inside one platform; choose Devdwell to look after many sites that are ordinary files.

In short

Webflow is better if you want to design sites visually on a canvas with fine control, run a CMS-driven site such as a blog or directory, or sell online, all inside one hosted platform. Devdwell is better if you look after many sites built in different ways, want to make changes by describing them in plain words, want sites that stay ordinary files you own, and want to share one site at a time.

Where Webflow is better

  • Visual design from scratch. Webflow’s Designer gives precise, visual control over layout and styles. Devdwell doesn’t have a design canvas; you describe changes or click what you mean.
  • A built-in CMS. Collections for blog posts, team members, listings and so on, edited by non-technical people. Devdwell has no CMS of its own.
  • E-commerce. Webflow can run a shop. Devdwell doesn’t.
  • Everything in one hosted platform. Design, hosting and content editing come from one company, with a large template marketplace and community.

Where Devdwell is better

  • Sites built any way. Devdwell doesn’t care how a site was made. A hand-coded site, an exported site and a site from a previous developer all sit on one dashboard.
  • Plain-words changes. Describe a change, or click the part of the page, and watch it happen. No need to learn a design tool.
  • Your sites are files. They stay on your computer, and published sites stay online where they are if you stop using Devdwell.
  • Per-site sharing. Invite a client to one site with “Can edit” or “Can edit and publish”.
  • Knows what’s live. The dashboard shows each site’s status, and stays right even when a site was published without Devdwell.

Staging in both

Both give you a way to check before going live. Webflow publishes to a staging address on its own domain as well as your custom domain. Devdwell’s publish panel has Staging (a private preview link) and Production, as checkboxes side by side.

Can you use both?

Yes. Some people keep Webflow for a client’s CMS-heavy marketing site and use Devdwell for the rest of their sites. If Webflow’s code export is available on your plan, an exported site can be imported into Devdwell as files; check Webflow’s documentation for what an export includes.

Questions

Is Devdwell a Webflow alternative?

For some people. If you mainly need somewhere to keep, change and publish many sites, yes. If you need a visual design canvas, a CMS or a shop, Webflow does things Devdwell doesn’t.

Can I move a Webflow site into Devdwell?

If you can export the site as files, you can import it into Devdwell. CMS-driven and shop features won’t come with it.
